4:04 pm - New HP fic
OK, not exactly fresh off the press, but 'new' since I last updated. . . .

Last year for the 2013 HP Beholder exchange, I was going to give Millicent a rest (I'm rather fond of her, so she's become my . . . fandom bike seems a bit harsh, though probably accurate), but then I had a plot bunny that blew that plan to Hades. My recipient dropped out rather late in the game, so I was shuffled around (and gave myself a completely irrational guilt trip because my new recipient had some brilliant prompts that were all for naught that year). Anyway, it had been a while since I've written Greg/Millicent, so Dull as Dirt, Brilliant as the Stars (or here if you'd rather read on AO3) was a nice chance to revisit that pairing now that my writing style has matured a bit more. It was also a good opportunity to explore my headcanon, which, for the past several years, has been pretty consistent in asserting that Millicent and Vincent Crabbe were an item in school.

Then, I wasn't going to write for Dudley Redeemed this year, as my summer was terribly busy, but I made the mistake of glancing over the prompts. I saw "Dudley is a strippergram. He gets booked by a group of witches." and the skeleton of a story fell into my brain. I had to write it--had to--so I spent a few months hashing out the details. I know the summary makes it sound a bit like crack!fic ("Dudley's a strippergram, Hermione’s turning thirty, Ginny and Lavender want to see bulging biceps, and Luna has an idea."), but I promise you that it is anything but. Read "Stripped Bare" at Livejournal or AO3.

It's HP Beholder time again, and I've just received my assignment, and I'm in that panicky stage of having a deadline and not even a hint of an idea. (P.S., If you happen to be my Mystery Author poking around for inspiration, just know that, while I tailor my fics to fit prompts or recipients' wishes, I never write fics that I don't like.)

3:45 am - My Fics
At the moment, my AO3 account is probably the most up-to-date for my recent fics.

Harry Potter Fanfic

Dudley Dursley/Millicent Bulstrode:
Below the Belt (R) -- All Dudley wanted to do was deliver the letter and return to his perfectly normal, relatively pleasant existence. Luckily for him, fate and Millicent Bulstrode intervened. Written for the 2008 hp_beholder exchange, which has a lot of good fics about non-standardly-beautiful characters.
NEW! Stripped Bare (R) -- "Stripping tended to make Dudley turn introspective (far more than pubs or churches ever had)."
Dudley's a strippergram, Hermione’s turning thirty, Ginny and Lavender want to see bulging biceps, and Luna has an idea. Written for the 2013 dudley_redeemed Fest.

Gregory Goyle/Millicent Bulstrode: (newer fic than some listed farther down)
NEW! Dull as Dirt, Brilliant as the Stars (PG-13) -- Greg is lost without Vince, but he somehow manages to find Millicent. Written for the 2013 hp_beholder exchange.

Silvanus Kettleburn/Millicent Bulstrode, Severus Snape
An Affinity for Dangerous Creatures (R) -- Albus Dumbledore (the lying bastard) had announced that Professor Kettleburn had retired to 'enjoy more time with his remaining limbs.' Millicent Bulstrode inadvertently discovers the truth (and then some). Written for the 2012 hp_beholder exchange.

Dudley Dursley/Luna Lovegood
Inner Beauty, My Arse (PG-13) -- "Missing the year prior to sitting one’s A-levels would have been quite difficult for a student of average ability, but for a student of Dudley’s calibre, it was downright disastrous." Written for the 2011 dudley_redeemed Fest.

Filius Flitwick/Pomona Sprout
Fair Is Fair, and Life Is Not (Though Tea Helps an Awful Lot) (R) -- Although their students might sometimes be oblivious to it, teachers have lives, too. Fertilized with dung and watered with tea, Filius Flitwick and Pomona Sprout cultivate a love slowly bubbling along behind the scenes. Written for the 2011 hp_beholder exchange.

Severus Snape/Millicent Bulstrode/Dennis Creevey
“Sod Off” Means “I Love You” (R) -- It begins and ends with the camera. Snapshots of life, and the living thereof. Written for the 2010 hp_beholder exchange. (Go ahead and click; you *know* you're curious!)

Neville Longbottom/Millicent Bulstrode:
There Are Days I Wish I Lived in a Romance Novel (But This Isn't One of Them) (PG-13) -- In a cluttered workshop and amid the rambunctious denizens of his greenhouse, Neville Longbottom discovers that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Now he only has to convince Millicent Bulstrode. . . . Written for the 2009 hp_beholder exchange.

Ron Weasley/Hermione Granger:
Hunger (PG) -- In which Ginny talks, and Hermione’s mind wanders. Written for the porkish_pixies 3-G (Gourmet, Gourmand or Glutton) Ron-a-Thon challenge.

Gregory Goyle/Millicent Bulstrode: (somewhat older fics than the ones listed above)
Velvet & Sidekicks -- Because, as much as books and movies tell us otherwise, perfect people don't live. While Harry is off saving the world, Draco is styling his hair and buffing his nails, and Hermione is getting top grades and cultivating a willowy physique, the rest of us are living, laughing, and loving. A tribute to the imperfect.
Memory Like Old Lace -- Much as movies would like to convince us otherwise, love isn't all doe-eyed gazes and steamy clinches. Much as divorce lawyers would like to convince us otherwise, real love doesn't pack its bags when times get tough. A real love story.
Afterwards -- "The hardest part about taking care of a person dying inch-by-inch isn't the sleepless nights, the wrenched back from lifting once (or twenty times) too often, or the isolation. The hardest part is afterwards."
Afterwards is a sequel to MLOL. They could be considered as an extension of the V&S storyline, although they don't have to (depending on your mood, really).

Vincent Crabbe/Millicent Bulstrode:
Keep It Simple, Stupid -- for The Great Harry Potter Drabble Challenge ("Is it possible to get a drabble written for every possible pairing in the Harry Potter world...each one by a different writer?")
BBW (Big Beautiful Witch) -- Vince has never claimed to be the brightest light in the chandelier, but once he gets an idea in his mind, he hangs onto it like a hippogriff with a nice, juicy ferret. Unfortunately, he’s always had difficulty expressing himself.

Arthur/Molly:
Behind Closed, Locked, and Soundproofed Doors -- "Arthur Weasley was rarely seen kissing his wife." Not all romances are conducted in front of the camera.

Millicent Bulstrode:
I Will Not Play the Martyr -- Millicent is not your average woman.

Vincent Crabbe:
Polyjuice Portrait -- "Vincent Crabbe hated little girls. More to the point, he hated being one."

12:26 am - Harry Potter fic
I continued my quest to share the beauty of the unbeautiful and the everyday heroism of the obstinately unheroic in this year's HP Beholder exchange. I didn't intend to write Millicent Bulstrode this time around (particularly since I decided on Silvanus Kettleburn as soon as I saw him on atdelphi's character list), but she inserted herself as a belligerent Magizoologist specializing in Muggle veterinary techniques before I could settle on one of the more mature female Hogwarts staff members. Then my duo of damaged misanthropes quite unexpectedly welcomed a third member: a canon-compliant post-DH Severus Snape, thereby surpassing (I think) my 2010 Snape/Millicent/Dennis Creevey fic for the weirdest bedroom scenes I've ever written.

I took the line from PoA about Kettleburn and the anecdote from The Tales of Beedle the Bard, snuggled it all around canon as best I could, and had a great deal of fun extrapolating my knowledge of veterinary medicine into the world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

I suppose that's a rather long-winded way to share my link to An Affinity for Dangerous Creatures, but--outside the magical bubble of HP Beholder--a ship like this just doesn't get read.

(As an aside, the folks over at Beholder write the most amazing comments! Fic posting and reveals come at about the worst possible time for me, so I rarely have the time and energy to reply as I should, but I wanted to let all of you Beholder commenters know that you have my most heartfelt gratitude.)

10:52 pm - New(-ish) HP Fics
Since last posting, I've written two more Harry Potter fics I can claim. My last HP Beholder entry (goodness, is it almost that time of year again?) saw my very first foray into writing Flitwick/Sprout. I was struggling a bit with my prompts, and then Fair Is Fair, and Life Is Not (Though Tea Helps an Awful Lot) came and surprised the dickens out of me. Like all of my Beholder fics, I've grown very attached to it and recommend it to all who are willing to be persuaded of alternate notions of beauty.
In a similar vein, the author reveals have just gone up at Dudley Redeemed, so I can admit to having perpetrated a fic over there, too. Inner Beauty, My Arse features Dudley with a side of Luna, a portion of Vernon and Piers, and a smidgeon of Petunia.

11:40 pm - HP Beholder
There's still time to join the fun (sign ups close Friday)! HP Beholder is a Harry Potter fic exchange dedicated to the characters who are marginalized by fandom when it comes to love and romance.
Last year I wrote Severus Snape/Millicent Bulstrode/Dennis Creevey. I wonder what will happen this time . . .

12:48 pm - HP Beholder
Well, for better or for worse, I signed up for hp_beholder again.
In the past several months, RL has chewed me up and spat me out, and I feel barely capable of stringing together a coherent sentence, much less a fic to give to somebody else. Hardly the way I wanted to jump into my favorite exchange, but that’s life, innit? I managed to come up with something presentable for the L&O secret santa exchange, so I suppose I’ll get by, but that blank computer doc just looks so daunting right now.

Ah, well, I’ve got my assignment, so I’m off to troll through old lj posts in hopes of some inspiration. See you on the other side!

9:07 am - LO:CI fic
Title: Normal is a Town in Illinois
Written for squarey in the l_and_o_santa secret santa exchange.
Characters: Goren, Eames
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 3011
Disclaimer: The characters and universe of Law & Order: Criminal Intent belong to Dick Wolf, NBC, USA, etc. No copyright or trademark infringement is intended.
Author’s Note: Set the day after the end of “Purgatory.” The partnership timeline assumes they had a year together before the series started, since Alex says, “Eight years I’ve had your back” during that episode.
Summary: “‘Goren’ and ‘normal’ rarely appeared in close proximity in most sentence constructions (well, except when they were connected by “is not,” though that was the exception that proved the rule), but he’d at least had habits and routines . . . .”

Author’s Notes: I had been writing this in the post-Season 7 period when my computer flopped, and I’ve only just brushed it off and taken it up again, so it’s set not too long after “Frame” and ignores the existence of Season 8. The title is from the first line of Rudyard Kipling’s M’Andrew’s Hymn.

12:00 pm - flist getting to know you
I don't usually do this, but I filled out a getting-to-know-your-flist questionnaire at daystarsearcher's lj and figured, 'Why not?' I wouldn't mind getting to know you all a little better. So, if you've got nothing better to do and would like to to view the questions (which are not mine, by the way), follow the lj cut.Collapse )

9:15 pm - hp_beholder reveals
Real life has been a bit much lately, and I haven't even gotten around to finishing reading all of the hp_beholder fics yet, much less reviewing them. Ah, well . . . I'll get there eventually.

Anyway, the masterlist reveal has now been posted and, from what I have read, there are some really good fics.

I was the fortunate recipient of a fic that was tailored nicely to what I had hoped for. Daring to Love by cardigrl - the summary really sums up what I love about it. Learning to live is hard. Daring to love is even harder. A post-Hogwarts short story featuring hurt/comfort as Millicent, Vincent and Greg struggle to make a life for themselves on their own terms.

I also wrote a fic for kaycee. There Are Days I Wish I Lived in a Romance Novel (But This Isn't One of Them) - In a cluttered workshop and amid the rambunctious denizens of his greenhouse, Neville Longbottom discovers that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Now he only has to convince Millicent Bulstrode. . . . Even though I was sweating it out down to the wire (well, a few days past, like last year), I did have a great deal of fun writing it, and my affection for both Neville and Millicent has deepened even further.

1:53 am - Er, Harry Potter this is not (“Think”, a Law & Order: Criminal Intent fic)
A small fic for ci_fans_unite, slightly late, but finally finished.
Title: Think
Prompt: handcuffs
Author: anguis_1
Pairing: Bobby/Alex
Rating: very mild R
Description: “Alex didn’t think of Tates when she tucked her handcuffs underneath the corner of her mattress.”
Disclaimer: The characters and universe of Law & Order: Criminal Intent belong to Dick Wolf, NBC, USA, etc. No copyright or trademark infringement is intended.
Author’s Notes: Post-Season-7-ish. Hmmm . . . I began with the intention of writing a smutty drabble, but a bit of a transmogrification occurred between there and here.

8:20 pm - hp_beholder and Porn Battle VII
It’s that time of year again! Sign-ups for hp_beholder are now underway (ending Friday!).
Not HP-related, but tangentially related in a non-standardly-beautiful-people-having-sex way: I participated in Porn Battle VII last week. My contributions are pretty tame in comparison with a lot of the other entries, but I was satisfied with what I wrote. I started out with a tiny ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ Bobby/Alex dialogue drabble (Insatiable), continued with Lionel/Jean from ‘As Time Goes By’ (It’s Been a Long, Long Time), and finished off with another, rather longer ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ Bobby/Alex fic (Button Up Your Overcoat).

11:35 pm - I gave fic!
I can now reveal that I wrote Below the Belt at hp_beholder for trickofthedark/Didodikali (who, incidentally, wrote a delightful Slughorn/Hooch fic for the same exchange). Not only did I get Dudley-fic, but I gave it, too. It's Dudley/Millicent, and I'm rather fond of it. (Er, it is R-rated, so it's probably NWS.)
