Well, for better or for worse, I signed up for hp_beholder again.
In the past several months, RL has chewed me up and spat me out, and I feel barely capable of stringing together a coherent sentence, much less a fic to give to somebody else. Hardly the way I wanted to jump into my favorite exchange, but that’s life, innit? I managed to come up with something presentable for the L&O secret santa exchange, so I suppose I’ll get by, but that blank computer doc just looks so daunting right now.
Ah, well, I’ve got my assignment, so I’m off to troll through old lj posts in hopes of some inspiration. See you on the other side!

Dudley Dursley/Millicent Bulstrode:
Below the Belt (R) -- All Dudley wanted to do was deliver the letter and return to his perfectly normal, relatively pleasant existence. Luckily for him, fate and Millicent Bulstrode intervened. Written for the 2008 hp_beholder exchange, which has a lot of good fics about non-standardly-beautiful characters.
Gregory Goyle/Millicent Bulstrode:
Velvet & Sidekicks -- Because, as much as books and movies tell us otherwise, perfect people don't live. While Harry is off saving the world, Draco is styling his hair and buffing his nails, and Hermione is getting top grades and cultivating a willowy physique, the rest of us are living, laughing, and loving. A tribute to the imperfect.
Memory Like Old Lace -- Much as movies would like to convince us otherwise, love isn't all doe-eyed gazes and steamy clinches. Much as divorce lawyers would like to convince us otherwise, real love doesn't pack its bags when times get tough. A real love story.
Afterwards -- "The hardest part about taking care of a person dying inch-by-inch isn't the sleepless nights, the wrenched back from lifting once (or twenty times) too often, or the isolation. The hardest part is afterwards."
Afterwards is a sequel to MLOL. They could be considered as an extension of the V&S storyline, although they don't have to (depending on your mood, really).

Real life has been a bit much lately, and I haven't even gotten around to finishing reading all of the hp_beholder fics yet, much less reviewing them. Ah, well . . . I'll get there eventually.
Anyway, the masterlist reveal has now been posted and, from what I have read, there are some really good fics.
I was the fortunate recipient of a fic that was tailored nicely to what I had hoped for. Daring to Love by cardigrl - the summary really sums up what I love about it. Learning to live is hard. Daring to love is even harder. A post-Hogwarts short story featuring hurt/comfort as Millicent, Vincent and Greg struggle to make a life for themselves on their own terms.
I also wrote a fic for kaycee. There Are Days I Wish I Lived in a Romance Novel (But This Isn't One of Them) - In a cluttered workshop and amid the rambunctious denizens of his greenhouse, Neville Longbottom discovers that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Now he only has to convince Millicent Bulstrode. . . . Even though I was sweating it out down to the wire (well, a few days past, like last year), I did have a great deal of fun writing it, and my affection for both Neville and Millicent has deepened even further.

It’s that time of year again! Sign-ups for hp_beholder are now underway (ending Friday!).
Not HP-related, but tangentially related in a non-standardly-beautiful-people-having-sex way: I participated in Porn Battle VII last week. My contributions are pretty tame in comparison with a lot of the other entries, but I was satisfied with what I wrote. I started out with a tiny ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ Bobby/Alex dialogue drabble (Insatiable), continued with Lionel/Jean from ‘As Time Goes By’ (It’s Been a Long, Long Time), and finished off with another, rather longer ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ Bobby/Alex fic (Button Up Your Overcoat).

Not only did I get Dudley-fic, but I gave it, too. It's Dudley/Millicent, and I'm rather fond of it. (Er, it is R-rated, so it's probably NWS.)

1:38 am - Well, I did it!
|
I wrote my first exchange fic! I waffled so badly on whether I should sign up, but finally went in for it because the premise was perfect for me. HP Beholder ((Beauty is in) The Eye of the Beholder) was formed to give a little love to characters "commonly thought of as too old or too fat or too ugly for a romantic and/or erotic relationship." As this pretty much describes my fic reading and writing habits these days, I eventually was able to convince myself to participate (with no small amount of nerves, I must admit). I had great fun writing my fic and am feeling ridiculously pleased with myself that I actually saw it through.
Posting starts April 10.

Well, Amazon came through, and Harry arrived on my doorstep a few hours ago. My brother and I have decided to read them at the same rate, so I'll have to wait until tonight to even open the box. Anyway, I hope to wring every drop of enjoyment out of it, so we'll probably stretch it out over several days. I'm temporarily dropping out of all internet HP contact (including my email) in an attempt to avoid spoilation. I didn't get my second VC/MB fic out that I am pretty sure is going to be shot down by DH, but such is life.
